DELL M6300 D/Port headphone jack not working on Windows 7 x64 RC

Question
-
Hi,
today I recognized that the headphone jack on the D/Port of my DELL Precision M6300 mobile workstation is not working.
The headphone jack on the laptop itself works fine.
Anyone else facing / solved this problem?

First the easy questions. Did the headphone jack work with the previous OS? Is the computer securely docked? Undock and redock carefully. Fix it?
I have Win 7 RC (64-bit) installed on an M6300 using a docking station also. I run my speaker system from the headphone jack on the D/Port. All is well.
Here's what I did: Prior to the installation I set the Sata mode to ACHI for the Seagate drive. I performed a clean installation of Win 7 RC on a clean and new partition. After Win 7 RC installed, I applied the Dell Vista drivers (matching the OS 32 or 64-bit) in this order:
1. Chipset 8.2.0.1014
2. Keep the Win 7 RC drivers for your video adapter-I have the Quadro 3600m and it likes the 185 drivers.
3. NIC-broadcom
4. Audio-Sigmatel
5. Modem-Conexant
6. Wireless NIC-actually used most recent Intel Proset from Intel
7. Touchpad-synaptics
8. O2micro-cardbus
9. Ricoh R5C-card reader
10. Turbo memory- Latest Intel version from Intel
The BIOS was updated to A12 prior to the install. You could do that later if you have not.
I would venture a guess that the chipset interface (Item 1) is causing the issue in docked mode as that would be a Dell specific configuration and not included in the OS with the caveat that the easy question answers are yes.
The system is stable and I have had no hardware issues since installation.- Marked as answer by Alexander Zeitler Tuesday, June 23, 2009 2:27 PM

Hi Alex,
This could sound redundant, but did you check to see if the "line-in" settings are involved? I have 3 Dell systems (not 64bit) and it just seems as though it's a "setting" issue. I could be wrong, but check the advanced settings on your sound properties control panel. If that doesn't do it then use the settings for the port replicator "line-out" settings... i.e. uncheck Mute or increase level output. Oh... not to mention the external volume dial,if applicable.
Good luck,

Hi John,
I don't have line-in or line-out options.
Where can I find port replicator settings? (In device manager there's only a docking station whose properties I can't change)

Hi Alex,
Did you get a "driver disk" with the port replicator? Is there a "control panel" for the replicator? I would look for settings that apply to the port in question. For example... go to your Windows 7 control panel... find system or similar icon... check your hardware devices and their poperties there. If you always use the replicator you should try checking the hardware without it first just to see and note the difference... then shutdown and connect it all back to "normal" and start-up and check hardware settings then. You may need to acquire an update for the replicator, but you'll have to wait for the "official release". Which,of course by then the "Major Computer" manufacturers will call them "patches" or "fixes".
Did you ever so gently "wiggle" the connection at the "jack" not the "port" conection? Maybe it's a hardware issue? Did it work right before?
Good luck,

Hi John,
I didn't get a driver disk for the port replicator.
I think I'll have to wait for the official release.
The jack did work until the installation of Windows 7 RC.
I've to port replicators and the problem occurs on both of them.

Hey Alex,
That may be the case... although I was viewing a some other forum topics and came across quite a few similar issues as you're having. It would seem that if you have been using Win7-Beta that these are common "type" of issues people have been running into. Some were with the front panel access on their laptops like headphones, mic, etc. Also found a few that have had no issues with Win7-RC but did with beta. If you go to Microsoft update and try to update all... not just urgent updates... you may find a hardware update that works. Are you using Win7 RC or Beta?
Well, either way the general release date is 10-22-09 of the Windows 7 OS.
Good luck,

Hi John,
I'm using W7 RC.
Win Update did not find any new drivers.
I'll have to wait (until july => hopefully RTM will appear in MSDN Subscriber downloads then).

Hi,
installing the Sigmatel-Audio driver for Vista x64 from DELL fixed the problem.
Thanks John and Nano Warp.

Hey Alex,
I'm very pleased when someone shares they're "fix" when the issues arise. I think this is the best way to make a "positive experience" probable... by saying "Hey,I know the fix for that". I'm not willing to give up trying, but if someone else solves my problem, I'll listen like they're "E.F. Hutton" HA HA... ooops showing my age.
Glad it worked!
Good luck,

I have exactly the same problem - and it's driving me nuts. I have a Dell Latitude D630 and did a clean install Win 7 Prof x64. Sound works on the 3.5 mm jack on the laptop, but not the D/dock. I did the bios udate to A16 and have installed the Vista x64 drivers I can get from Dell (Note that for Win 7 x64, there are no drivers for the D630 running Win 7 right now!). So I've used Vista x64 drivers - but I'm not too sure that's wise.... whilst most went in OK (I did the chipset driver update), the Sigmatel Stac C Major Vista x64 driver (R171788) gives me an error message during install saying it's not "not the correct audio driver for this system". Which is weird. As of today, 12/20/09, the Dell site still has no dedicated drivers for the D630 running Win 7. Boo. I am curious that Nano Warp was able to install the Vista x64 Sigmatel driver. So I either need help too.... or the patience for Dell to release drivers.... sometime next spring I guess. Boo again.Sunday, December 20, 2009 5:02 PM

Hello all,
I was experiencing the same problem and also found that installing the Dell's Sigmatel-Audio Vista x86 driver for my 32-bit Windows 7 Professional install fixed the problem.
Thanks to John and Nano Warp!
Cheers,

Same problem, simple solution.
I set the headphone playback device as Default in Sound controls, from the control panel.
Easy.
