  • Let's say that we have a KMS with 100 Keys.

We ghost 50 PCs and activate them via KMS.
Now, we have 50 more keys, right ?

    What if 1 PCs's HDDs broke ?
We buy an other HDD and reghost it.
Now we have 49 keys left, but only 50 computers.

How do I get the missing key ?
Will the counter -1 after 173-180 days ?
Can we just remove that "computer" with VAMT ?

    Thank you !

    Have a nice day !

  • Hello,
I hope before you ghost the PC's that you sysprep them to recreate the computer SIDs.

    To answer your questions:

Now, we have 50 more keys, right ?   <--- Correct

Now we have 49 keys left, but only 50 computers.  <-- Incorrect with KMS

KMS keeps track of twice the amount of machines that are required to activate (10 - Server, 50 - Clients) in order to make sure you never fall below the 5/25 minimums for using KMS. After 180 days, each of the machines check into the KMS Host and reactivate the license. KMS also, does not care about hardware changes (yes, it will ask for activation, but it will just automatically activate and does not increase the "100" count).

So in brief, if you are using MAK then you would need to worry about this type of problem, but using KMS you don't need to.
