Device CALs for workgroup computers? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are upgrading one of our domains to Windows Server 2012 R2. However, we were a little unsure about CALs and was hoping someone could give us clarification on what we have to buy. We have 3/4 of our workstations / printers connected and listed in our AD. I understand we need CAL for these.

However, the rest of our workstations on this network form part of a work-group and are not part of the domain. However, we plan to configure these so that they have a preconfigured mapping to a couple of shared network folders that reside on the network's servers. Users will gain access to these folders and networked printers via a VPN connection.

Do we need to buy device CALs for these work-group workstations too?

Moreover, we have a number of Windows Server 2008 R2 device CALs. Is it possible to convert these to Windows Server 2012 R2 CALs or do we need start afresh?
