installing sql server 2005 on windows 7 RRS feed

  • i have installed sql server 2005 on windows 7..now as i have inquired online i have to install sql server sp3..i downloaded SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-IA64-ENU..bt wen i try to install this i get error message that "SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-IA64-ENU.exe is not a valid win 32 application"??pls help...

    1.firstly do i really need to install sp3.

    2.what should i do to install it as i am getting this error message.

  • When you see "IA64" in the name of the file, this indicates that this particular version is for machines running the Itanium 64 bit processor.  I can tell you for sure that this is probably not your case.

    What you have a Pentium CPU class machine (which is quite probably your case), what you need to use is the file with either the designation of "x86" for 32 bit or 64 bit operating systems or with the designation of "x64" for the 64 bit operating system exclusively.

    The 32 bit version (x86) can run on both 32 bit and 64 bit OS (OS is for Operating System) while the 64 bit version (x64) can run only on the 64 bit OS.

    Even if your version of Windows is 64 bit, when installating the service pack, you must use the same version as the original version of SQL-Server that you have installed. So if you have installed the 32 bit version of SQL-Server 2005, then you must install the 32 bit version of the SP3.

    As indicated in the other post, this is quite probably the file SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x86-ENU.exe in your case.
