Installation check keeps saying "pending restart" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to install on a clean server, all patches have been applied and the system's been restarted several times.

The installer for SCCM 2012 keeps saying another application requires the system to be restarted.

What can I do to get past this?

    Thanks!

  • Check the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Server manager registry key. What's the value of CurrentRebootAttempts? If this is greater than 0, that means something that Server Manager did requires a reboot. You should check the Server Manager console and ensure that there's nothing outstanding in there that would require a reboot.

  • You could check for pending file renames. There may be one that's not clearing out which is causing setup to fail.

While this KB is specific to Visual Studio, the troubleshooting steps could be helpful: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830608

  • Thanks. I checked the locations in that KB article and no luck.

  • So the registry key 'PendingFileRenameOperations' is empty?
What's in ConfigMgr's logfile (can be found in C:\)?

  • Yes.

I searched through the entire registry. The only place the "PendingFileRenameOperations" shows up is in \control\BackupRestore\KeysNotToRestore.

    Also, here are the logs...

    ConfigMgrSetup.txt:

    ConfigMgrSetupWizard.txt:

Thanks for whatever help anyone can provide. I'd like to get this installed since we purchased 315 client licenses.

That was it. Server manager didn't say anything about needed a restart (the box had been restarted a bunch of times since installing roles and features)

I changed the 1 to a 0 and the install is running now.

    Thanks.

  • In our case, 'CurrentRebootAttempts' was set to 0. We deleted another string value 'Action' under 'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Server manager' and this resolved the issue.
