command prompt file and folder completion RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've noticed that when I open a window via Ctrl+Shift+"Open Command Window Here", I can complete file and folder names by pressing the tab key.

If I open a command prompt by running cmd.exe, tab completion doesn't work, and it seems as though there is no cmd.exe option that enables tab completion.  (There are registry keys that allow one to specify the file completion character and folder completion character, but setting these to decimal 09 doesn't have the desired effect).

So, my question is the following: What is Ctrl+Shift+"Open Command Window Here" doing under the hood, and how can I make cmd.exe do the same thing?  (I want to run cmd.exe because I can tell it to run a batch file that defines aliases.  It seems as though there is no way to do this with Ctrl+Shift+"Open Command Window Here").
