Exchange 2013 DAG and archiving RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Team

Please checkout this scenario.  I am setting up exchange 2013, 3 mailbox servers.  We want to implement exchange 2013 archiving but space is the issue

    1.  Is it possible to have 2 mailbox servers in a DAG and the 3rd one to be just a stand alone mailbox server for a specific database?

    2. Is it possible to have a separate mailbox server (Outside of the DAG) just to handle the archive?  Or no, if the DB is on the DAG then it cannot be done.

    Thanks

  • Hi Kman2k,

I think it is possible to configure two mailbox servers in a DAG configuration and place the third mailbox database configuration outside the DAG.

To archive the e-mails you make an extra account on your third database. This account do you add an additional mailbox in your MAPI client (such as Outlook).

Microsoft Exchange 2013 add user to seperate mailbox database

As you can see in the picture above, you can configure an mailbox on a seperate mailbox database.

You can still configure this mailbox database in your DAG configuration, but that is unnecessary if you do not replicate this database.

I hope this is helpful for you

    Sincerely,
    Martien van Dijk

  • So what you saying is this ==>

    YES to both questions???

    1.  Is it possible to have 2 mailbox servers in a DAG and the 3rd one to be just a stand alone mailbox server for a specific database?

    Answer: YES

    2. Is it possible to have a separate mailbox server (Outside of the DAG) just to handle the archive?

    Answer: YES

    Correct, yes to both.

If we setup DAG with two member servers, it is best to set the witness server to be a third server.

  • Hi Kman2k,

Archives are often stored on mailbox servers that aren’t DAG members to avoid filling expensive storage with archive data.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/jj933280.aspx

Any DB you use for Archive Mailboxes should be designed and treated just like any other database, because it is just like any other database. :) You can certainly choose to only put archive mailboxes inside of a particular database, but it is still just a mailbox database. It will not function any differently from the other DBs in your org.

  • Hi

It is also possible to present different types of storage to DAG member servers and store your archives on there.  You don't have to have copies of all your databases on DAG members.
