Cannot add Active Directory Domain Services role on - DirectoryServices-DomainController . Status: -2147021879 (80070bc9)

Question

Hi everyone,
I've been banging my head against this for a while and hope someone can help me.
Running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with Service Pack 1.
When I try to add the Active Directory Domain Services role to the server it gets to about 90% complete and then dies.
The ServerManager.log shows the following information, I have run the System Readiness Tool - output below - with no errors found.
At a loss on what to do next. The only other links I've found suggest rebuilding the server which I would really like to avoid...
Help appreciated,
John

Hi Zhang,
The only thing I saw in the Event Viewer is in the System log:Event Id 7001, The DFS Namespace service depends on the Remote Registry service which failed to start because of the following error:The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.I set the service to Manual, started it and the Installation succeeded.
Thanks,John- Marked as answer by John J Parker Friday, January 20, 2012 5:03 PM

Hi John,
Thanks for posting.
Performed some research and some results say that this problem can be caused by HD Write Caching.
To disable Write Caching:
1. Go to Device Manager.
2.Click the plus sign (+) next to the Disk Drives branch to expand it.
3.Right-click the drive on which you want to enable or disable disk write caching, and then click Properties.
4.Click the Disk Properties tab.
5.Click to select or clear the Write Cache Enabled check box as appropriate.
6.Click OK.
If no luck, Please check if any erros can be found in Event log, Dcpromoui.Log and Dcpromo.log

You are the man of the world in my eyes today! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your resolution here. I've spent hours upon hours trying to fix an AD installation failure on a brand new server build, and I was at the end of my rope. My problem was not this exact one, but the direction you gave to look at the system logs and at services status saved me! My problem ended up being the Server service itself. It was set on "Disable" and as such killing the AD install everytime. I tried so many things. My poor server has to have been restarted 100 times. Once I set the Server service to automatic, started it, then rebooted.... voila! It worked. Thanks again.

Three yesrs on from the first post and two people in a week with the same problem solved the same way!
For me it was the Remote Registory as well, set to Disabled by the security policy. Fixed in seconds.
Thanks. Alan
