Moving MOSS 2007 VM and DB VM to new domain RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've done some googling and searches on these forums, and I've found some information on migrating a farm to a new domain, but they tended to be oriented around having a trust between the domains, or moving the farm onto different physical servers, or some other difference from what we're trying to do.

We have MOSS 2007 Enterprise set up on a VM, with SQL Server 2005 on another VM, tied to a domain controller on a third VM.  We're planning to move the MOSS and SQL Server VMs to a new domain, and to decommission the domain controller VM along with the old domain.

So, we need to prepare MOSS and SQL Server for the switch so that we can quickly get things up and running again.  These servers are mainly used for testing purposes, and there are only about 10 users total.

SQL Server is currently configured in Windows Authentication mode.  I'm pretty sure that will be a problem after the domain switchover.  I'm not sure what other problems we're likely to have, which is why I wanted to ask here first.

Some of the articles/posts I've seen so far:

As near as I can tell, the best method for our situation would be to:

    1. backup the farm
    2. remove the servers from the farm (there's really just one server in the farm, the other is the DB server)
    3. change SQL Server to Mixed Mode Authentication
    4. make the domain change on the VMs
    5. Fix the service accounts in IIS
    6. add the servers back into the farm
    7. add the user accounts (all the users have accounts within the new domain already)

I'm not sure about that though.  I'm not an experienced admin, and unfortunately we recently lost our admin and haven't had time to find a new one.  Any help I can get would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

You did a lot research and everything looks fine.

Only one thing I would like to mention after migration if your users remain with same user name then run following command to migrate users from old domain to new domain which will enable them to log in using new domain credentials.

    stsadm -o migrateuser -oldlogin <domain\name> -newlogin <domain\name>
