How to relocate MOSS 2007 database files to a new partition, drive ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have an internal Portal in MOSS server 2007 with embedded version of SQL server. Media/.doc/PDF files are constantly being updated, the database is growing rapidly and we are running out of disk space , as a result, the site when accessed shows error pages.

Is there any way to relocate our MOSS database files to a new partition, drive (in our case E ) while leaving them attached to the same SQL Database Instance?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    R

In this case if you are running out of space you will need to move your databases from the embedded version of SQL Server to a full copy of SQL Server.

There is a 4GB limit in database size of the embedded version for *MOSS 2007* (there is no limit for the embedded version for WSS 3.0).

The databases of the embedded version can only be stored on the same server as the SharePoint installation. Another partition on the same server is possible but will still not give you a larger DB size than 4GB.

As you will (in order to exceed 4GB database size) need to move to full SQL Server, you should seriously consider having a second server for SQL Server and the SP databases as this will be a much more efficient solution than a single-server solution.
