A bug in resource leveling or something I don't understand? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Using MSP 2010 and W7.

    • Entered non-effort driven fixed duration tasks with durations and predesessors.
    • Set max units for resources at total avail crew size say 6 mechanics
    • Assigned resources to tasks with whole number units to represent the number of people required for the task (eg 2 mechanics became mech[2])
    • Turned on automatic leveling

One of the tasks with a 3 day duration and 4 mechanics (12d work) was (prior to leveling) scheduled to begin prior to a three day exclusion period on the mechanics schedule. It was properly shown as 6 days duration (1 d prior to the exclusion and 2d following). The successor task was appropriately scheduled to start the next day.

When the project was leveled the task start was shifted out past the exclusion period. It was scheduled for the next 4 consecutive days ( a 1/2 d, 2 days, and a 1/2 day). So far, so good, as I would expect. But the task duration is still shown as 6 days and the successor task doesn't start until the 6 days finish even though there is no activity shown in the last three days. On the Leveling Gandt view there are dotted lines in this 3 day period - the top one has a bubble called "Pre-leveled Split" and the bottom one has a bubble called "Split" both show the start and end dates covering the 9 day period (2d for weekend and 7 not 6 because of the 1/2 day start) .

Unchecking the "leveling can create splits" doesn't change behavior described above. What's happening here and how can I correct it?

  • Hi,

This means you had yourself manually introduced the split around their time off period; leveling will not split itself but it will respect the splits you introduced. Just eliminate the split by dragging the second part of the task adjacent to the first part then level again.

  • Since you are splitting up your team you are much better off creating the individual resources, such as mechanic1, mechanic2.. etc, and assigning the individuals to their tasks.

Always have leveling set to manual, so that you can do it when you want to do it to see the effect, and clear it when you want to, and so that it does not keep on re-calculating after every tiny edit.

The duration is always measured in working days, even if there are splits.
