Unable to install IE 10 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have two domain controllers, both Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, 64 bit. The hardware is identical on both blade servers. I am unable to install IE 10 on one of the servers. The first one worked doing windows updates, the second one keeps failing. Failed message from windows updates: Errors found: Code 9C59 Windows Update encountered an unknown error. I have tried multiple KB articles to try and get this downloaded (normally coming back with already installed or not applicable) as well as try standalone installs. None have worked. Any help would be great.

    Thank you

  • Hi,

This issue can occur for various reasons. To resolve common installation issues, try one or more of the troubleshooting methods below.

Troubleshooting a failed installation of Internet Explorer 10

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2820688

Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997

If all steps fail, please provide us with the cbs log for analyzing.

    1. Navigate      to the following folder: C:\Windows\Logs
    2. Right-click and on the CBS folder and select      Copy.
    3. Minimize      all open windows and right-click on your Desktop, then      select Paste.
    4. Right-click on the CBS folder on your Desktop      and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
    5. A file, CBS.zip      should appear on your Desktop.

Then, upload the .zip file to SkyDrive and put a link to it in your next post.

  • Hopefully it doesn't matter for the day that I tried everything on the list since I did them last week. However, attached is the CBS log.

  • Hi,

    Sorry for the delay respond.

First I recommend you try removing kb976933 for test.

We used the following command to uninstall the package :

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514

After analyzing the CBS logs, I found the Error code 0x80070490, If the issue persists, please refer to the article as below to troubleshoot the issue.

Error code 0x80070490 when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

  • I have installed the system update readiness tool in the past with no effect. I have not ran repair installation of windows as this is currently not an option.

    Thank you

  • Hi,

    Sorry for the delay respond.

And sorry for the mistake, the package should be Package_for_KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.7601.17514 but not the Package_for_KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514.

Please try the dism command again for test.

    Hope this helps,

    Ada Liu

  • Tried the dism command but received an access denied. I am the administrator on the server below is what was entered and received in the command prompt window:

    Access is denied.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

I will try to look for reasons why access is denied but if you have an answer, please let me know.

  • Hi,

for anyone having upgrade problems, try this

    First go to : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2818833

download all required updates, and then go to :

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39213 and download KB2834140

The last update created allot of problems for me, the IE 10 reported in C:\Winows\IE10_Main.log that it is missing tihs update, but decided to isntall IE 10 anyway, and after reboot it caused to revert failing updates.

So the first link is not complete. This problem caused me 2 days of troubleshooting, so hopefully it will help someone.

    Regards
