Overwrote a Word Document and Can't Find any Previous Versions RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi! So I accidentally saved an essay with another essay last week, and I had already finished what I needed to do with them, but as of now I found out that I need the first one back. I have already looked at my previous versions tab but there is nothing there. I'm pretty sure I saved over the first one but I have had no luck in getting it back. Is there any way I can get my file back?? I did not have Backup turned on and I have Windows 10 and Word 2010. Thank you!!

  • Hi Alex1097,

I'm afraid it would be hard or almost impossible that we recover a file already over-written in a normal way (even if it is done by mistake).

I would like to search the way, but cannot understand where [previous versions] tab is located.
Would you explain where it is?  (I have Word 2010 in my computer for testing)

  • Hi Alex,

Are you using "Save" instead of "Save As" after changing the original document? Have you enabled Track changes feature in Word document?

If you used the "Save" button and no Tracking enabled, the content has been overwritten. Unfortunately, we cannot recover the previous version.

Please notice to make a backup for your important documents for best practice in the future.

    Best Regards,
