Transfer a WIN XP internal HDD to Vista external USB HDD? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My WIN XP machine just died.  I'd like to remove the Ultra ATA HDD, put it in a USB-connected IDE/PATA external enclosure, and access the data, photos, etc., from my wife's Vista laptop.  Will this work?  (I'm afraid the file formats may be different between XP and Vista, which could cause incompatibility).

Thanks (and sorry if this has been answered a million times, but I've searched for 30 minutes and not found a similar thread).

  • Yes, it will work. but buy a cable rather than an enclosure as it will connect IDE, SATA, 2.5”, 3.5” HDDs and Optical drives – and it’s quicker and cheaper than an enclosure.

To give you an example of the cable, here is one on an English website http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136214
