Cannot edit and save files opened from link in an email RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have problem with some users who cannot open and edit an excel file. The have contribute rights only on this file so they cannot go directly to the document library and use the classic "Edit with Microsoft Excel". We need to send them link to the document by email. Then they can open it, do changes, but when they try to save it, they have the message : "file.xls is read-only. to save a copy , click ok, then give the workbook... " and they can only save it locally.

I tried repair Office on one of the computer with no success. The document is not checked out.

    Any ideas?

  • Hi Pratik Vyas,

No this is not the case. This appears only with Office 2003 (not 2007!) and it seems to be a known and BAD problem. The only way is to edit the document by opening it directly from SharePoint and not from a link or open the link by the client application (Excel, Word, etc.).

  • Hi Djai-Dev,

This happens when two people have the same Excel file open and one wants to save the changes made. So to resolve this enable check out option and then try.
