MDT 2013 Single Task Sequence with both INSTALL and UPGRADE DeploymentTypes RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have three task sequences that will deploy Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 that work great.  I am attempting to combine them with some conditional statements based on the model number.

Due to driver compatibility with some machines I need to INSTALL Windows 7 and UPGRADE to Windows 10.  I am having difficulties getting a single Task Sequence to respond correctly when I copy/paste the UPGRADE task Sequence into the INSTALL task sequence.

Is it possible to combine the different Deployments Types?  If so, how is this handled, a variable in Bootstrap.ini?

  • MDT doesn't really do what you are asking. You can filter to only show the relevant task sequence though.

Logs are very important. https://keithga.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/video-mdt-2013-log-files-basics-bdd-log-and-smsts-log/ Mention any customizations you have made.

  • Ty, I wasn't planning to ask anyone to parse my log files until I knew the process should work.  That said, I have now documented my process and provided three examples all of which have the same issue.

The computer boots to a USB MDT thumb drive, which detects the %Model% and deploys either Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 based on the model variable.  (This works.)

Once the computer restarts and after the initial drivers are initialized the video performance is tested and that is when I get a pop up message that reads:  "Install Windows :: Windows could not pase or process unattend answer file [C:\Windows\Panther\unattend.xml] for pass [oobeSystem]. A component or setting specified in the answer file does not exist."

The only reference to this exact error tells me that it was fixed in MDT 2013 Update 1 and I have Update 2.  There is a workaround listed, which is already in my Deployment Share.  (I assume this was the fix in Update 1 as I did not edit this file.

I had the entire process working at one point, The MDT process detected the model and installed the corresponding OS and completed installing all my applications and provided a finish screen with no error but when I added another step to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 for select models this error showed up and I have not been able to recover, even after creating another Task Sequence from the built in template and leaving out the upgrade steps.  Since a new task sequence is not working I am at a loss for words.

    Thank you in advance

  • I don't have a box account.  I can't look at these logs.

  • I used Box because they allow for "public" sharing.  (The FAQ on this forum still instructs the use of a public share via SkyDrive and yet OneDrive no loger offeres public shares, so I thought I would try Box public shares.  I think the FAQ at https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ef0a9119-63b6-45ae-a871-866ea62ee3e8/mdt-technet-forum-faq-getting-started-guide?forum=mdt needs modification.)  I have placed it on OneDrive as below and can provide sharing to your email address.

Thank you for continuing to try to provide help.

  • I can't access your sharepoint either.  If you use OneDrive and right click you can create a share link such as:

  • Based on Task Sequence Fails After Upgrading to MDT 2013 U1 I suspected that the issue may have arisen from the fact that I did indeed open the original XML at one point to gain the OSGUID (Later I found the 'correct' way to obtain it).  With this as suspect I deleted my operating systems and re-imported each of them, making appropriate changes to each task sequence.

Re-Importing the Operating Systems did indeed fix this issue.

I appreciate your willingness to help as I did indeed upload the logs to OneDrive and did indeed create a link for sharing, but apparently what our Office 365 account calls "OneDrive" is actually SharePoint but it's the only OneDrive titled cloud service I have.
