Cannot install .msi files in Windows 7 RC RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the Windows 7 RC I've tried to install an SVN client but for some reason any .msi files I try to use dont work. Such as most recently the Games for Windows Live setup package.  When I Install I get:

An error has occurred while installing XliveRedist.msi
    Fatal error during installation.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Fixed it myself using the following method. For some reason the temp file variables were not correct. To fix this I went to
My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Environment variables -> User variables
and changed the user setting to match the one in the system settings window below.

  •   Are you running msiexec from a command prompt? Make sure you open the command prompt as "run as administrator"

  • Hi,

I suggest you try to install the msi file in Safe Mode to verify whether it is a Windows Installer problem or not.

Windows Installer will not work under Safe Mode by default. To make Windows Installer work under safe mode, you need to create a registry entry for every type of safe mode you are logged in to.

    1.       Start the computer in Safe Mode.

    2.       Click Start, type CMD and press Enter.

    3.       Please run the following commands one by one.

    REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"

    net start msiserver

    4.       Then, Windows Installer will be started.

    5.       Try to install the msi file.

Please let me know the result.

    Thanks.

  • I tried that and got the same error.

An error has occurred while installing XliveRedist.msi
    Fatal error during installation.

If it helps the error I got from the SVN and others was a 2203 error.

thanks. *note to self: delete is not edit*

  • This did not work for me, as per the log file:

The system cannot open the device of file specified.

This occurs when the app attempts to make a System Restore Point.
