Issue with SAN Drive Migration in master database in clustered SQL Server 2005 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • All,

In our SQL Server 2005 SP1 cluster, I have to retire the existing SAN and move all my databases to new SAN drive. I have successfully moved all datafiles (user, system databases, resource) except master database.

When I start the SQL Server from cluster administrator / configuration manager (after changing the parameters), I see that the start-up parameters are changing back to originalpath (old SAN), however I am able to start the SQL Server successfully from command line (without any flags).

    Any help is much appreciated.

  • In addition to the link provided by Chunsong, you would also need http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953504 in order to change registry entries in clustered environment.

  • What you are seeing there is a result of registry checkpoint mechanism that we have in clustering.

If you can make the registry change AFTER bringing the SQL resource online the change will be made permanent in the registry.. if you make the change BEFORE bringing the resource online the new modified entry will be overwritten with the value which exists in the quorum. The supported ways to srevent this check are documented in the KB953504.

  • Hi

Please move the Master system database according to Moving the master Database section at Moving System Databases (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345408.aspx) on Books Online.

    Thanks,
    Chunsong
