Outlook 2016 for Mac - Unread and read email status does not sync RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am using Outlook for Mac 2016 (Version 16.23 (190309).  Everything works fine except if I read emails on Outlook for Mac 2016 it does not reflect on OWA (Outlook web app) it still remains Unread.  My email account is on Exchange Online.

If I read any email on OWA then it gets read in Outlook but not vice versa.  Same thing using iphone if I read any email on iphone it gets read on Outlook as well but not vice versa.

I have rebuilt profile 3 times until now but same results.

    Is there any advise?

    Thanks

    Raman

  • Update:

I have done more testing if I open message or few messages still same issue, those messages still appear as Unread in OWA.  After reading all messages in Outlook for Mac I highlight those messages and explicitly "Unread" those message again and then "Read" again.  It takes instant effect and those messages get Read in OWA as well.

Still not able to find out the cause why it does not work when I simply open up message and read it.

    Thanks

  • Hi Raman,

If we click Send/Receive button to manually update folder, will read status sync correctly?

Except read status, do other items sync well?

Do you have any antivirus software running on this computer? We can temporarily close them and see if it works.

Besides, if we wait for a while, will read status finally sync to OWA? According to my research, a large Inbox may cause a long syncing which can extend beyond a minute.

We can also start your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with Microsoft Office for Mac applications. Please refer to the steps in this article.

Any updates, please feel free to post back.

    Regards,

    Perry

  • Hello Perry,

    Thanks for your response.

    ==============

If we click Send/Receive button to manually update folder, will read status sync correctly? - No

Except read status, do other items sync well? - Yes, everything works well other than "Read" status.

Do you have any antivirus software running on this computer? We can temporarily close them and see if it works. - I already tried it does not make any difference.

Besides, if we wait for a while, will read status finally sync to OWA? According to my research, a large Inbox may cause a long syncing which can extend beyond a minute. - I thought it could be the issue but it works if I manually right click select "Unread" and then "Read" it again it works with in few seconds it get marked as "Read" in OWA.

I tried in Safe mode still same issue.

    ====================

I have been doing some more testing and I have found if I use "Reading Pane" (I do not use reading pane I always keep it hidden) and read that message via reading pane "Read" status sync with OWA.

Even with using Reading pane I double click on the message and open it, then it does not sync "Read" status.  or if I completely remove Reading pane and open up new message by double clicking it does not sync read status which is my setting I never use reading pane always double click and open the message.

It could be a bug.  If you have Outlook for Mac 2016 (Version 16.23 (190309) may be please test it by removing reading pane and then open up the "unread" message by double click on it use shortcut keys (control+]) to go the next unread message it will make messages "read" but OWA would not reflect it.

    Thanks

  • Hi Raman,

I tested this issue on Outlook 2016 for Mac version 16.24(190313) and read status sync correctly whether Reading Pane was turned on or off.

Currently, I haven’t found other reports about this issue on version 16.23.

Considering your situation, we can uninstall Office for Mac completely to see if it helps.

Reference: Troubleshoot Office for Mac issues by completely uninstalling before you reinstall

Besides, you can upgrade to 16.24 to check the results. Please check the details in this article about Office Insider.
