DPM 2010 -Shrinking volume RRS feed

  • Question

  • Currently our short-term backup is set to retain backups up to 21 days.  We would like to shrink the volume by changing the short-term retention from 21 to 9 days.

I assume I can do this by temporarily stopping the protection, then changing the short term retention from 21 to 9 days.

Can someone tell me what happens to the data currently stored in the volume?  Does everything saved in the volumes get deleted that is older than 9 days?

    Thanks,

    Terry

  • Data will get erased once it reaches its original retention limit.

Your old data won't be erased until it reaches 21 days.

  • Hi Tbrewerdog,

You do not need to stop protection to reduce the number of days from 21 to 9, just reduce it then at midnight DPM will delete the excess number of recovery points to match the new retention range.  In the morning, you should see the used space on recovery point volume will be less.  Now try to shrink the recovery point volume.  It may take a few days for new recovery points to be written when the old recovery once resided so the volume can be shrunk, but keep trying everyday and eventually you should be able to get some disk space back in the DPM storage pool.
