License metering in App-V 5? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've looked through the articles about license metering and they dead ended because they discussed a per-device license.

    However, what about this scenario:

    Suppose we have X employees that use a particular application.  That application has a restriction of Y concurrent users of the client at any time, but who those users are irrelevant.  For example, you have 40 employees that need access to the system via the client, but no more than 10 of them need concurrent access at any given moment.  Thus we only buy 10 licenses for the 40 employees - so an 11th employee would be unable to get access to the software until one of the 10 users quit the application.

    In app-v 4.6 they had a perfectly good license metering system - we could create an application license group and be done with it.  Now that it is removed in App-V 5, how do we handle this situation?  Remember, this is a virtually streamed application, not an msi that gets pushed out to install the software on the machine - and our license restriction is concurrent users and NOT a per-user license or per-device license.  How do we get App-V 5 to recognize only 10 users can use the client at the same time (AD restrictions don't work as there are more than 10 users in the group)?

  • Hello,

    App-V 5 does not offer this natively in anyway. You would have to construct your own solution for this, which may or may not be limited to Microsoft products.

    This tool would perhaps be something to look into with for leveraging along with SCCM 2012;

  • Thank you - I was afraid you'd say 3rd party solution.  Looks more and more like App-V 5.0 ripped out all the features we need but only on an occasional basis and we'll have to stick to app-v 4.6 since it works fine there.

  • hey,

    have you found a good solution in this? We are currently facing the same questions. Even Inventory on App-V packages that a user centric seems to be an issue.

    any helpful links or tools ?
