Error message when renaming folder in Windows 7 Explorer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Today I get an error message when renaming or moving a folder on any hard drive using Windows Explorer.

    Error Message "Element not found."

Clicking on "repeat" works and causes no further problems. Renaming or moving on command line works without error message.

Problem did not occur two days ago.

Recent changes: Installation of new update KB4022719 (failed on June 14, succeeded on June 15). No others I am aware of.

Removal of update did not solve problem.

Chkdsk did not find any problems.

Deactivation of UAC did not solve problem.

Any ideas on how to get rid of the error message?

    Thanks

    Ingrid

  • Hi,

Please use the Process Explorer to check which process keeps your file in use.

You can also try to rename the folder in Safe Mode to see the result.

In addition, I suggest you to run SFC scan and check if it helps.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files:

  • Process explorer shows the directory as not in use.

System File Checker finds a lot of things. It also finds a lot of things in the next run (and the next and the next). However, the annoying error message persists.
