PWA cannot open Excel doc using Excel Services. RRS feed

  • Question

  • When opening a Excel doc using OWA\ Excel services in PWA we get an 403 error and message stating "The website declined to show this webpage.  Most likely causes:  The website requires you to login."  We can open up Excel docs with Excel services from any other SharePoint site including the root site of PWA.  Verified the Excel services account has access to the PWA content DB.  No errors found in ULS.  Fiddler just shows the 403 at IIS. I don't believe anything is wrong with Excel services itself as it functions anywhere outside of PWA. Switching off of Excel services the doc opens fine in OWA.   It looks like PWA gets blocked from accessing the Excel services link?  Any ideas on how to troubleshoot further? Thanks.

  • The answer to this solution finally came with the April 2015 CU and the help of a great engineer from MS Project support team.   We had in the past removed the Apply Themes and Borders from the User permissions of the Web App.  This bug only affected PWA and nothing outside of PWA. Once the user right was checked the 403 errors went away with xlviewer.aspx.

  • Hello, not seen this before but some things to check. How many application proxy groups do you have? Check that Project Service app and Excel Services are in the same group. Do you have a root site collection in the web application that hosts the PWA site? Paul

  • Do you have your PWA site/library in trusted file location - Plan Trusted File Locations in SharePoint Server 2013

  • Hello did a get-spserviceapplicationproxygroup and it came back with the [Default]  group.  We do have the Super User and Super Reader accounts configured and thought it might be something with that but we do have a root site collection that is hosting the PWA site and everything is fine in the root.  It also works fine in one of the team sites in another collection.  Its only PWA having the issue.

  • Yes we have it in the trusted file location. To verify we also added http:// and https:// to include everything and still no go.  I don't think we are even getting that far as the error is an IIS error thrown when calling the Excel services xlviewer.aspx page.

  • Another clue on this is when using wopiframe.aspx to open it works just fine.  Only using xlviewer.aspx in PWA gives the 403 error.
