Upgrade Exchange 2010 Hybrid to Exchange 2016 Hybrid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any guidance on the upgrade process of Exchange 2010 Hybrid to Exchange 2016 Hybrid.  All my users mailboxes are hosted in O365 but since we still maintain local AD we must continue to maintain Exchange on premise.

The upgrade should reduce our current 9 servers to 1 server.

It would be great if anyone had an alternative where I could decommission Exchange on premise, but from what I have heard management of users email attributes would have to be done through ADSIEdit.

    Thanks in Advance.

Prep the forest for Exchange 2016:

    Extend the schema for AADConnect:

Re Run the Hybrid Wizard and select the 2016 servers for transport/certs etc.

    Remove the 2010 servers

  • When you say "Remove the 2010 server" do you mean just run the uninstall for Exchange server through control panel, or is it a little more in-depth than that?  Do you have documentation for doing a removal after it has been upgraded to a new server?

I have just completed a 2010 hybrid to 2016 hybrid migration where all of my mailboxes were already in the cloud and now all I need to do is remove the old server.  Exactly how do I do that?

Yes, Remove via the Control Panel

Exch will flag any send connectors that still have the 2010 servers as a source.

  • Awesome...that makes is easy.

What about the hybrid configuration?  Would it just take that out?  I have already ran the HCW on the new server.

Did you exclude it when you ran the Wizard? If so, its already out in that sense.

If the receive connector is part of a load balanced array, make sure that its not referenced there anymore.
