Simple File Sharing RRS feed

  • Question

  • How do you turn it off (disable it) on XP and windows 7 machines in a Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 domain using group policies?

Is it needed at all?  99% of my machines are in a domain.  I leave a couple out for different tasks.  I am pushing out Vipre and Symantec Anti-Virus clients from the console and this is making some machines fail.

    Thank You, Scott

  • Hi Scott,

We don’t need to turn off domain joined computer’s “Simple File Sharing”.

Please refer to the following links:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040

    http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/winxpnetworking/ht/winxpsfs.htm

After reading the above articles, you will know the following information:

“Windows XP Professional-based computers that are joined to a domain use only the classic file sharing and security interface.”

“If the Windows XP Professional computer is part of a Windows domain rather than a Windows workgroup, this process for enabling or disabling Simple File Sharing has no effect. Simple File Sharing always remains disabled for computers joined to domains.”

    Regards,
