  • Question

  • Running XP Professional (32 bit) with service pack 3 for long time, and updates doing well.  Just updated to Outlook 2010 which works fine, except I can't do manual Windows updates now - get message saying "Encounter a problem, can't display page ... Error message 0xC800042D.

I''ve run window fix-it which made some changes, but still have the same problem above.

Windows auto download of updates is working.

  • A few months ago I also encountered a similar issue on 32-bit Windows XP Professional with SP3 (albeit it didn't have to do with Outlook 2010).  That system was not part of a domain, just workgroup/standalone.

In my case I fixed it by forcing a reinstallation of the Windows Update Agent 3.0

KB946928 "Information for network administrators about how to obtain the latest Windows Update Agent"

    http://support.microsoft.com/KB/946928

In that KB there is a link to download the "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" package:

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Once downloaded, I saved it temporarily to the root of C, then logged on as a local admin and ran this:

    C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe  /wuforce

The "/wuforce" switch forced a reinstallation of the Windows Update Agent even if it's already installed on the system.

After that, I tried Microsoft Update again ( http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate ) and it worked OK.
