Folder Redirection server 2012

    Question

  • Hi all ,

I installed server2012 essential, and there are some problems , please help if you can.

1, problem : I have made active a Folder redirection from Dashboard/devices/implement folder policy. I tried to join to domain, and all works fine. The Win7 folders Contacts, docs, music, video ..etc. are all in Folder Redirection folder under users folder name. (fodler Redirection\user1). The sync is working fine. Q is : Why server's admin and Network admin cant access those folders made by user1??? How to backup those folders, for backup reasons ??? It has to do with permissons!

    2. problem: It's very difficult, and time taking,  to set permissions for all those user1's folders for server admin to have access. ( for one user isnt a problem , but for 20 users .., all have a 10 fodlers , .. do the math). Q is : How to set permissons to server's admin to have access to Folder Redirection subfolders and files , for the future clients that will join to domain and automaticly create folder's??

3.problem : If there isnt a solution to the problems 1 and 2 , is there a way to reset the folder redirection policy, or disable it , to the point where no policy was activated. ( like a fresh installed server)

    Thank you in advance .

PS. I'm still amazed that server admin can't access server folder, even a folder redirected fodlers made by users - Wow

  • Hi,

    >>Why server's admin and Network admin cant access those folders made by user1???

This is because we didn't uncheck the option Grant the user exclusive rights to (redirected folder). This sets the NTFS security descriptor for the %username% folder to Full Control for the user and local system only.

We can try to back up the folders with local system account.

  • Ok

I configured the folder redirection from the group policy - to disable "Grant users exclusive rights".

So now, every new client (user), gets modified policy settings, and it works.

With enable Administrator/ Full Control on a Folder redirection folder, it works. As tested, now the redirected user folders can be accesed and backed up.

Q: Who has the right ( permisson) to delete folders prior to setting up a new modified Folder Redirection policy, those users folders who had been created before ?

We shouldn't delete these folders. Administrators can forcefully take ownership of these folders, and then modify NTFS access permissions.

  • Hi ,

    Strange thing!

I reinstalled the 2012 server from scratch. Now I wanted to apply the folder redirection as it worked in previous posts and with your helping advices.

So I made change to GPO and removed the "Grant user exclusive rights" check from Documents, Desktop,Contacts.

P.S. I didnt enable Administrator/ Full Control on a Folder redirection folder !!!

On the server I made a new user, who will on joining get modified GPO. All Ok till now.

When a (user) client is joined to domain, there is a message that the Recycle bin on RedirectedFolder\Client\Documents is corrupted. Also on Desktop and contacts folders, but not for all other folders that didn't get the gpo change.

I tried to delete the recyle bin folder from those folders ( with server administrator, and it does delete), but every time client logins ,it comes back, saying that is corrupted.

    What is causing that problem??
