Sharepoint External Data Source in form RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to add an external data source into a form, I've added a database connection to a sql db via a custom command but these don't appear useable within forms? Appears i need to create an external content type but the command i've specified joins a numbe of tables.

Am i missing something or do I have to create a content type for each table connected and set it that way?? Ah connect to a view instead yeah..

  • external content types can be created based on views and stored procedures, not only based on tables: How to: Create an External Content Type Based on a SQL Server Table. I.e. you may create view or stored procedure which will return joined data from several tables and create external content type based on it.

In general if by "form" you mean list form (new or edit) then yes, you may look into external content types direction. But if you mean custom ASP.Net page with some form then it will be simpler to directly connect database via ADO.Net or Entity framework.
