Can't change Workgroup Templates location - Word 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Office 2016 installed locally on a couple of Windows 10 systems that are joined to a Server 2016 domain which is using AD Sync up to Office 2016.   I'm trying to set the Workgroup Templates location in Word to a network file share.  I navigate to the share just fine but when I click OK, the location isn't updated - it still shows the default location of  \\thisdomain.com\netlogon\Templates

There is no GPO setting in place for this.   We are using InTune for device management but that shouldn't be impacting this.  I've tried using multiple formats on 2 different computers:

    \\SERVERNAME\Path

    \\SERVERNAME.thisdomain.com\Path

Z:\  (mapped drive to the path)

None of these work.  Word will just not accept the change.  Any ideas?

  • I strongly recommend keeping the user's Workgroup Templates folder local and updating it as part of the user login. Among other things, this allows laptop users to be productive away from the network. it also simplifies maintenance of the templates.

  • I know this is an old case but I am facing same problem and I am unable to change/edit the workgroup templates path at all. AD joined win10 with 365 Proplus 64 bit office. My colleague with office 2016 installed it works fine. Tried several PC with office 365 proplus and they cannot edit the path either.

Have tried regedit, GPO, APP policy etc but no luck at all to set the correct path.

    Any advice will help alot.

Have you tried, on the user's computer:

File > Options > Advanced > File Locations (button near bottom)?
