I'm currently investigating how to implement network edge authentication with microsoft iis7 where the iis is used as reverse proxy. we have an authentication service that can be used to authenticate user with a directory service.
my question is whether an ISAPI filter on IIS could be implemented to extract credentials from an HTTP authorization header and forward them to any kind of authentication service (may also be via http). the
service will return a session cookie that could be stored on iis.
so, the idea would be to implement a custom isapi filter or maybe leverage existing iis components to enable forwarding of authentication and session handling.
