PTR record not updated RRS feed

  • Question

  • PTR record not updated in DNS, even though Update associated ( PTR) record is not checked in the A record properties. What is the reason for this. I have seen this happen both for static and dynamic records, but does not happen allways.

  • Hi,

    Can you check if you have the Register this connection's addresses in DNS?

    If we want to registry PTR record, we need to check "Create associated pointer record";

    Besides, check configurations on client, we need to check "Register this connection's addresses in DNS";

    Check in DHCP scope properties > DNS, UNCHECK "Disable dynamic updates for DNS PTR records";

    Also, on DNS server, we need to the verify that you have created the correct Reverse Lookup Zone.

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • Sorry I meant to say that the Update associated (PTR) record is checked in the A record properties, still it did not update the PTR record.

  • A few servers for which PTR records are not updated, are getting ip address from a non-Windows DHCP server. Can a non-windows DHCP server register PTR records for a Windows client in DNS?

  • That depends on DHCP server settings. You may also want to check which permissions this DHCP server uses to update DNS records and see it it has access to Reverse lookup zone of yours.

  • Hi samb789,

    Do the PTR records not update for IP addresses from non-windows DHCP server?

    Can you register PTR records if you manually create the records?

    Best Regards,

    Anne
