Project Online Migration from 2010 architecture planning of departments RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We have scenario where we have 7 separate departments in our organisation we are planning to migrate from project server 2010 to project online. we have one pwa for all departments as of now in 2010 on prem.

Now we are planning to have separate pwa's for each department to reduce permissions issues and other changes req for each department.

    User: 3500 +

    Projects: 1900

    Project sites: 2000+

Is it the right approach to have separate PWA's in online or we can have single pwa and manage as earlier

    Thanks

  • Hello,

The tool will support all departments in one PWA instance. Are there specific permission and config requirements that one instance will not support then?  If project plans will use resources from multiple departments it makes sense to have one PWA instance. Do view the limits of project and project sites per PWA instance though:

    Geetha,

Interesting you have far more Project Sites than Projects, but as Paul pointed out, look carefully at the boundaries and limits post where you will find that an individual PWA can only realistically store 2000 project sites.

This would indicate the answer to your question is indeed yes, using separate PWA instances in Project Online is required for this scenario.

  • Thanks james and Paul for the reply,

Scenario is we have 3500 Projects in our environment and in that around 1200 change projects are archived / closed.

As of now we want to migrate first the active projects based on departments and then see how we need to migrate closed / archived projects.

Thats the reason i have posted this question how to plan on this but there are budget constraints on the same as well. So as per the current plan will be going with single PWA.

    Thanks,
