Opening links in same window RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want links to open in same window, but at present it is opening in new tab in same window. So I went to Settings, Tabs and I changed the settings from 'A new tab in the current window' to 'The current tab or window'. I clicked OK. Clicked Apply. Restarted computer (as it says won't come into effect until then) and when I try again it still opens in new tab in current window and when I check settings, it has reverted back to 'A new tab in current window'. Can you help?

  • Hi,

As far as I know, this behavior is by design. Internet Explorer cannot open all the links on web pages in the same windows as you wanted, it depend on HTML coding sometimes.

Can you achieve it by right-clicking on a link and choose "Open"?

Also, you may try to contact Google to confirm this.

  • up until yesterday whenever I used google to search for something, I would click the link and it would open in same window.
That's a user preference.  Up to now Google has made me respecify it each time I lost its Cookie.  Perhaps I won't have to do that any more?  E.g. maybe Google has noticed that more people want it and therefore has made it a default?   <eg>

  • Hi,

Is this a personal computer? or are you on a domain network...

It sounds like your system administrators have a Group Policy setting preventing your changes to tabbed browsing settings taking effect. Please contact your companies System Administrators for assistance.

anyway... not all web page links are programmed to open in the same window...

Please include the address of any websites you are having issues with in your questions.

Post consumer questions about IE to http://answers.microsoft.com (Help>Online Support menu from IE)....

this forum is for questions from IT Professionals (system Administrators) using MSIE browsers on their networks.

    Regards.

  • Thanks. It's a personal computer and up until yesterday whenever I used google to search for something, I would click the link and it would open in same window. Yesterday it started opening in a new tab and I had made no changes to settings. As I said, I can't seem to change the settings and keep them changed. It is every link on google.
