Queries about Lync server Deployment in a Cross Forest Topology RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a few queries w.r.t Cross Forest AD Deployment.

    a) Is it mandatory to have Forest and Domain functional levels across the Resource forest and the Account forest with the same functional Level?

    b) Will an External Trust (One way from Lync to account forest, as i know Two way trust is the requirement) suffice?

    c)  In a scenario where there isnt any exchange deployment in both the forests, would we still need to have the disabled account in lync forest and link it with the account forest(account). Is synchronisation necessary in this case?

  • You will find more information on Technet for Cross Forest functionality
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg670909.aspx

    For you Questions

    1) Only the Forest where Lync is deployed you need the required domain functional levels

    2) One way should be sufficient I would say as only the accounts must be able to login into the Lync forest

    3) When you also want Exchange mailboxes in the Lync Forest to be Cross Forest the you need disabled accounts, when you only have Lync then you should create contacts only.

  • Thanks Johan,

    Jus 1 more query

    a) So it is not possible to create a user in Resource forest enable it for lync(and disable the user account in AD) and link it(attribute linking) with a user account in the account forest. Am i correct?

Did u mean that in a No exchange server scenario only the user to contact mapping will work?

  • I guess it would work but that is not what Microsoft will support and has been tested.

You should follow the guidelines on Technet, but having a Contact or a Disabled User why would you require user vs contacts?
