How does People Search work using Fast?

    Question

  • Hello all!

I have SP 2010 Farm. I also have Fast Server installed in my farm.

What i need to do, it to able People Search using Fast. My problem is: where i need to configure Content Source for Crawling, in Search Service Application(default) or in Fast Connector? And what url's i need to add to "Start addresses"?

    Thanks a lot!

  • You will want to use the FAST Search Query SSA for people search and only people search. It is the sps3://server search in the list. People search uses the SharePoint search and not FAST thats why its located in the FAST Querry SSA and not the Content SSA. Hope this helps.

    I'm sorry, but i didn't understand nothing?

Where i need to configure Content Source, in Default SSA or in Fast Search Query?

When i configure in Fast Serch Query i get a following error: " "

The start address http://servername cannot be crawled.

    Context: Application 'FAST_Search_Query', Catalog 'Portal_Content'

    Details:

The object was not found. (0x80041201)

    When i configure: http://sentralAdminURL:port i get a following error:"

    http://sentralAdminURL:port Open Menu

Access is denied. Verify that either the Default Content Access Account has access to this repository, or add a crawl rule to crawl this repository. If the repository being crawled is a SharePoint repository, verify that the account you are using has "Full Read" permissions on the SharePoint Web Application being crawled. ( Error from SharePoint site: HttpStatusCode Unauthorized The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. )

  • Whe you install FAST Search you will create a Querry SSA and a Content SSA (there should not be a Default Search SSA). You will be using the Querry service for your People search, the one that looks like this sps3. For searching your content you will Content SSA this will be the one doing the searches on your http:// sites. In order to search these sites you will need to make sure you have given the search account full read permisions on the web application you will want to search.

    Thanks for you replay.

Most probably i didn't explain my self aas good, as i thought. I know, that Fast Content SSA will be using for Site Content Search and Fast Query SSA will crawl people for a search. My problem now is: when i configure in Fast Query SSA following start adresses: http://servername and sps3://servername and start crawling i'm get an error:"The object was not found"

    What could be a problem?

    Thanks.

  • Your people search needs to be sps3:// to the root sitecolletion of one of your web applicaitions. If it is sps3://servername it won't work. So choose one of your web applictations and edit the content source in the query service to search sps3://webapplicationrootsite. Let me know if this helps. You will also want to make sure that it has the proper permisions on the user profile service.

I want to ask you couple questions:

    1. If have 4 Web Applications. To be able to perform "People Search" do i need in Fast Query Service Applicaition to configure "SPS3://" for each Web Application?

By the way, yesterday my People Search finally succeed. I just configured in Fast Query Service Applicaition the following: http://mySite and sps3://mySite and didn't configured nothing else. Why i almost didn't see sites/blogs/articles with suggestion instead of http://serverName and sps3://serverName to put http://mySite and sps3://mySite?

    2. Why in each site, explaining about People Search Configuration, i see, only examples like: http://serverName and sps3://serverName? When i put http://serverName i get as wrote above error: "The object was not found. (0x80041201)". You can try to do it by yourself and i think will get same error?

    3. Why when i put in Crawl Content sps3://CentrallAdminSite:Port or sps3://mySite i able to perform People Search?

And finally, does any body knows exactly how exactly to configure People Search work? Even Microsoft writes following:"In the Start Addresses section, type the start address in the form sps3://<hostname>, where <hostname> is the host name of the server farm". But when you do it doesn't work?

    Thanks a lot!

  • Sure.

    1. You only need to point it to one of the web application. This web application needs to have a site collection at the root of the site.

    2. People search only works when you point it to the root of a web applcation. It will not work pointed to server name if there is no site there..

    3. Not sure I quite understand what you are asking but if you are pointing to web applications it will work.

I am not sure why the documentation says to point it to sps3://hostname. If I had to guess I would say its because if you run the wizard to configure SharePoint (I DO NOT RECOMEND DOING THIS) it puts a default site at that address on port 80.
