  • Hi Michael,

    A tenant usually relates to:

    • a person who occupies land or property rented from a landlord.
    • occupy (property) as a tenant.

Because O365 is a Microsoft Hosted Service to Subscribers that will be occupying tenanted Domain Name (Eg. @yourdomain.onmicrosoft.com) from their service and therefore you are considered as a Tenant. If you have multiple divisions in an organization that have their own Domain and you prefer to keep them seperate due to the organization operations, you will probably consider Multi-Tenancy scenario where you have multiple tenant with O365 (Eg. @corp.onmicrosoft.com, @linkedin.onmicrosoft.com, @nokia.onmicrosoft.com, @xamarin.onmicrosoft.com).

You can refer to this Microsoft Blog post for a deep dive on O365 tenancy scenario for better understanding of why it they are using this term Tenant.

    Hope it helps. :)
