Skype For Business 2016 Installation Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a Windows 7 environment with Office 2010 installed.  We installed the Skype For Business 2016 client that is part of the Office 2016 install package.  We are having issues that although we only installed SFB their seems to be registry entries that that are pointing to the Office 2016.  We have gotten around some but we having issues with Excel documents that reference ODBC databases.  We get the error in the attached when trying to configure the Excel part of the ODBC Data Source Administrator.  It is referencing a DLL that doesn't even exist.

Questions are, is there a way to reset the registry so that the other office components do not reference anything 2016?  Is there a way to deploy on the Skype package without installing all of the Office 2016 components?  Should we not have tried to deploy SFB until we where ready to deploy the full version.

We were using OC 2007 client that is end of life so that is why we where upgrading.  Back end is Lync 2013.

  • Hello,

Base on your description, I know that the ODBC Data Source Administrator not works after install Skype for Business 2016 into an existing Office 2010 PC, it seems use an Office 2016 .DLL file and fails.

Correctly, it's support to install different office version on same PC, however it still may cause some unknown issue (just like your example).

In your current situation, I recommend we can try two options:
    1. Contact ODBC provider, ensure whether there's a new version to compact Office 2016.
    2. If this application is more important to you, then we have to remove Skype for Business 2016.

    Best Regards,

    Allen Wang

  • The only thing we found was registry hacks that had to be put into a startup script.

  • if i understand that correctly, you used a script to check the below registry and location of the DLL file.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls, *.xlsx, *.xlsm, *.xlsb)

C:\PROGRA~2\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\OFFICE14\ACEODBC.DLL. If it did not point to Office14, your script changed it. Is that correct?

  • These keys:

We put it in the startup script because Office has a tendency to repair itself and any updates will reset the keys back.

  • Thank you so much.

I have noticed that if i install MS Access DB engine on top of Skype 2016, it fixes the issue. But still testing it...

  • I believe we tried that route too and it worked but again when updates happen Office tends to fix itself and it thinks those registry keys should be 16 and not 14.

  • I just wanted to add one more point which is also related to this issue. I was having issue with Mail merge in word as well. So i did some digging and found out that location of the DLL file has to be modified in below registry location. Pls make sure to backup your registry before doing any changes.

    HKCR\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{3BE786A0-0366-4F5C-9434-25CF162E475E}\InprocServer32\(Default)",,"Type: REG_SZ, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\ACEOLEDB.DLL"

The folder should be Office14 instead of Office16. Once that folder was change, i did not get any mail merge issue in Word.
