Running sysprep ruins existing user account RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • A quick steps-to-repro to show just how busted sysprep with respect to appx apps. Curious what thoughts others out there have on why this happens or how it could be dealt with.

On a VM with no internet access, install Windows 10 1709. Create a local account "A" during the OOBE process.

Once logged in, restart. Then wait 20 minutes to let things settle (some stuff is still being setup in the background).

Now from an elevated command prompt, run

    c:\windows\system32\sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize

Power up the VM when that's done.  Go through OOBE again and create another new local user "B".

Switch to your old local user.

Open your start menu. It's missing a ton of stuff. Try to launch calculator. It's not there. Several provisioned apps, but not all, are missing and stuck in the "Staged" state. You can run powershell commands to get them back, but that seems pretty unreasonable.
