Error when rescanning tape library - DPM 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

Hoping someone can help me with this issue.  I have a Quantum Superlaoder 3 with an HP LTO Ultrium 4 drive (16 slots) attached to the DPM 2010 server.  I have installed a multitude of drivers for the tape library and tapes - the get-dpmlibrary command produces this result:

Any help here would be much appreciated.  The issue seems to have started when I started loading drivers into Device Manager to get the Quantum Superloader to be recognized as the Medium Changer, and the HP Ultrium as the tape drive.  They both show up once in Device Manager.   Even when removing these devices and doing a rescan in DPM 2010, the error still presents.  I am unable to get past this.  Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: The tape library and tape drive both show up once in DPM 2010 as well.

    Thanks.

  • Hi

In your Management / Libraries tab, does your Quantum Superlaoder show up as a library with X number of tape drives or a library and X number of stand-alone tape drives?

How many libraries are they? You got a lot of offline libraries in your logs.

  • Hi Robert,

In Management/Libraries, I see the following:

    Library: Quantum SuperLoader
    Drives: Hewlett Packart LTO Ultrium-4
Slots: Slots 1 through Slots 15

I'm not sure how to get rid off the offline libraries.  They don't show up under the Management/Libraries tab, and of course, when I try to rescan I get the error mentioned above.

    Thanks,

    Kyle Lim

EDIT: It's not a standalone tape drive.  Just one HP LTO Ultrium-4 drive.

  • To get rid of the offline library you must modify your protection group that uses the long-term storage and choose just to use short-term (disk).

  • Hi Robert,

Thanks for your responses.  None of the protection groups are using the libraries (they don't show up under Management), but according to a Microsoft post, they are kept "in" the system and not removed because of some machination of reporting.

Do you know of any logs that I can peruse that would help resolve this issue?  I lose connection to DPM with the error in my original post whenever I attempt to rescan, refresh, erase or mark as free any library/tape  in the Management -> Library page.  I can inventory fine, and my devices look ok.  If I remove the devices from Device Manager and unplug them, I still receive the same error, which makes me think it is DPM that is having issues (or maybe an odd driver issue).

Thanks again for all your advice.

    Sincerely,

    Kyle Lim

  • Hi Robert,

We have resolved this issue.  Here is a link to the article that helped us out:

    http://scug.be/blogs/scdpm/archive/2009/11/25/system-center-data-protection-manager-2007-tape-problems.aspx

After running this script, things are going smoothly.

    Thanks again,
