SharePoint DR Licensing

    Question

  • Hi,

I m planning to set up a SharePoint farm in DR site using SQL Always ON with asynchronous replication.

Compared to primary site, DR farm will have lesser servers for SharePoint.

I would like to know whether same license can be used for SharePoint? Do we need to shutdown the SharePoint servers to use same license? For SQL I believe we need to have separate license.

    Regards, Sarath

Answers

  • You must purchase separate licenses for each SharePoint Server in the DR farm. Unlike SQL, there is no 'DR' licensing for SharePoint.

  • Is that the same case if we are shutting down the SharePoint VMs in DR site after setup?

  • As long as you don't turn the VMs on, you'd be in compliance. Then it is more or less just a backup rather than true DR.

Microsoft does not support taking online backups of VMs while the SharePoint servers are running in a farm.
