Consolidate data from multiple tapes? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Recently, one of our monthly backups stored data for each protection group on a separate tape, instead of co-locating them as expected.  The monthly backup used 5 tapes instead of one, and some of the tapes contain less than 100GB of data.  Is there any way in DPM to consolidate the data back onto a single tape?  Possibly by copying the data to a scratch disk and then to a new tape?

  • Hi,

Assuming you figured out why the backups did not collocate as desired, you can make a new "monthly" recovery point using a powershell script. Once the new RP's are made on a single tape, you can run the forcefree-tape.ps1 script to free up the 5 tapes that have a single RP on them.

Although you cannot pick the recovery point date in the past to make a new recovery point from, you can run the DPM Power shell script in this post to select a recovery goal to make a current backup for.  The recovery point date would be that of the latest disk based recovery point for any goal selected.
