Computer names by MAC addresses from an external data source RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

    I am trying to customise my CustomSettings.ini file so it can set computer names based on their MAC addresses. I know that it can be done by using something like this:

    [Settings]
    Priority=MacAddress,Default
    [Default]
    OSInstall=YES
    [00:15:5D:85:6B:00]
    OSDComputerName=PC00075

    However it's not very convenient when you have a few hundreds of computers on your network. First of all I don't want to have my CustomSettings.ini file with few hundred lines. Second of all it is really inconvenient if you have to edit this file each time you purchase new computers, etc.

    So my question is: would it be possible to tell CustomSettings.ini file to look for a list of MAC addresses and their corresponding computer names somewhere else on the network? For example is it possible to dump a CSV file into a folder on my Deployment Share and put a line into my CustomSettings.ini file to check for the list of all MAC addresses in that CSV file. Then my CVS file could be regularly updated in an automated way (I can take care of this part).

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

    Did you ever hear of the possiblity to connect MDT to a database? It's just the thing you need for scenario's like these.
