Windows is "Activated" but Product Key still "Invalid" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey All,
I recently got a new laptop that had Microsoft Vista pre-loaded on it.  When I tried to enter the product key, it said it was invalid.  I called the Microsoft support line and they walked me through the activation steps.  Supposedly the activation was successful.  My computer now says "Windows is Activated".  However, every time I try to open up Word, Excel, etc., a pop-up window asks me to enter in the product key, when I do, it says it is invalid.

At this point I have spent hours on the phone with Microsoft and nobody seems to want to help, they just give me another number to call.  If you guys have any ideas of what might be the problem, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks again

  • Microsoft Office requires a separate license AND a separate Product Key than Windows Vista. It is also not included with the OS.

I am guessing the store loaded a trial version of Office and this is the problem you are having.

You need to buy the software or download the free OpenOffice

  • The product key affixed to your new computer is for Windows Vista and not Microsoft Office.  In order to activate your trial version of Microsoft Office, you need to purchase a license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

  • Hi SD_ Engineer,

teh computer you have bought must be an Office ready PC. Normally an Office ready PC is its comes with an operating System such as XP or Vista and a trial version of office 2007 which can be used 60 days (basically its a 60 day trial). during the trial period you can buy a office 2007 media less license kit (MLK) which comes in a box without a cd (media) and only with a small wallet card which contins the product key of the version of office 2007 you have purchased.

You can enter this key on the office activation page and make your office a full version.

The trial office is embedded with your computers OS image.
