Cannot instal Windows Update KB3035583 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have tried numerous times to install "failed" update KB3035583. The update will only download 92% or 97%, then says it is preparing to install but never does. When I check the failed install, it shows error code 80090017. How can I install this update?

  • According to the description about this update package, it's not necessary for Windows update. You can adapt to hide this update through Windows Update. It won't effect Windows udpate function.

  • This update is mysterious optional one. If you are not prompted, do not install it.

    Here is response from Internet:

If you noticed a new patch released via Automatic Update on Friday and can't figure out what it's for, you aren't alone. A quick poll among my usually knowledgeable experts reveals they are mystified as well.

KB 3035583, entitled "Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1," is an optional patch. Unless you've opted to automatically install optional patches (a decidedly risky proposition), you'll have to check the box next to the patch in the Optional list, before it will install on your system -- which is all for the best.

  • This update was listed as "important," not as optional. Is there some way to get this update out of the "important" category?

  • Hi,

There is no way to get this update out of the "important" category. To resolve this update package install problem.

Firstly, access the path below to check if the pending.xml file was there, if that it is, remove it and restart the computer for test.

    C:\Windows\WinSXS

Secondly, try to check CBS.log in C:\Windows \Logs\CBS

  • Your first suggestion, i.e., looking in C:\Windows\winsxs, yields over 22,000 file folders so I have no idea where to look for a pending.xml file.

Your second suggestion, i.e., to check the CBS.log in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS, gives me a list of 6 files total.  One is titled CBS and says it's a text document, but when I try to open it, I get an "access denied" message.  The other five files are "Cabinet" files that that I didn't even try to open since I have no idea what they are or what would happen if I tried to open one.

Bottom line is that this problem is still unresolved.

What would happen if I "hide" this update? Will it affect future updates?

    Thanks.

  • According to my update history, this updated was successfully installed on 4/4/2015.  It then appeared again in May and failed to install on 5/18/2015. When I tried to "hide" this update (after many unsuccessful attempts to install it again), it somehow affected my anti-virus software, stating that it was turned off and I could not manually turn it back on.  After I "unhid" the update and restarted my computer, my anti-virus software once again appeared to be working properly.

Should I uninstall the successful 4/4/2015 update before trying one of your suggestions listed above?  I'm no computer whiz, so which of your suggestions above would be easiest for me to try?  I'm running Windows 7 Professional.  Would that make a difference as to which "fix" would work?

    Thank you.

  • This download has now created a different problem.  While the Windows 10 reservation icon has appeared, the Action Center tells me that my anti-virus software is now turned off, although the Norton 360 icon does appear to be turned on. When I open the Action Center to try to "turn on" Norton 360, nothing happens when I click on the "Turn On" button.  This same thing happened when I tried to "hide" the original KB3035583 update that would never download or install.  Should I just uninstall the update again and not try to install the Windows 10 reservation at all?

    Thank you.

Sorry for the trouble. May I know the name and version of Norton you have? Do you have any other security product on your computer? May I know the name of the operating system that you currently have on your computer? I can help.

    Thanks!

  • I have Norton 360. Windows Defender is turned off. My operating system is Windows 7 Professional.  I have uninstalled the KB3035583 update, which uninstalled the Windows 10 reservation, but my Action Center problem has, once again, disappeared.
