computers hanging at applying computer settings

    Question

  • Hello,

We are having massive problems with computers that are hanging at startup. They keep hanging at "Applying computer settings".

Not all of the computers are doing this, but about 20 out of a 100. We tried many things like: Changes to group policy, logging, network. But all seem to fail, and seem to return the problem one way or another. Maybe not today or this week, but next week it will return at random.

Right now we have turned om the GPSVC logging, and got a logfile, but I don't understand where it is failing. I tried to make it understandable with Policy Reporter, but still no succes.

When the computer is hanging it get the following line in the log file which a computer that boots correctly does not have. Can someone please help me with this?

  • Hi

Make sure that fast logon optimization isn't configured, applies also for Windows 7,

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/305293

And also check this hotfix used to performance around group policy application has been optimized.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2561285

Also make sure only the domain DNS servers are configured on the NIC of the machines and none else.

  • The problem is not solved. Took a long time for testing, but today one of the users was hanging again.

both links did not help, because the mostly don't apply to my case. Out users cannot loging, and it keeps hanging  on applying computer settings. (I've waited for over 2 hous at one computer.

It just seems to be stuck, I can ping the machine in some cases, but cannot run any process tools for troubleshooting, so I don't know what process is hanging, or not working good. The above log is the best thing I've had yet, but I don't understand the log file.
