Switching from Data Center eval to standard RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

    What is the correct process, if it's even possible, to apply a 2016 standard license to a 2016 data center evaluation server? Is a full reinstall of the server required? If it's currently a GC DC does it need to be demoted? Thanks.

  • Licenses are distribution specific.  A standard activation key cannot be used to activate a data center installation.

    Domain controllers running on evaluation copies of Windows Server are not supported to be activated.

    Bottom line is that it would be better to perform a clean installation.

  • Two problems;

    • you can not downlevel convert from DataCenter to Standard
    • it isn't supported to convert an evaluation to full once it is a domain controller.

    the simplest solution is to build a new one. I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting. Then stand up the new 2016 Standard, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over, transfer pdc emulator role, use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health, when all is good you can decommission / demote old one.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.

    I'm afraid that you can't switch from Datacenter evaluation to standard.

    The best way to rebuild a new. After all is good, you can demote it.

    Hope the above information will help you.
