Vista VLK Activation Error after 1.5 years -- Cannot login! RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I go to type my password and hit enter, the "Welcome" comes up and the wait cursor, or wait "spinning" animation appears and then 30 seconds later I get the Validation error, and click "More Information".

It shows error 0x8007026 I beleive it was.  And says "The service has not started".

The computer and OS was working fine for about a year until recently.

The only thing I did was install Windows XP in dual boot (but Vista still worked a few times after that), and then on the Vista side I installed McAfee A/V, and also ran a registry cleanup (which probably caused it).

None the less, is there a work around?

I can't even login to the system, period.

Also, this is a Windows Vista release for VLK, and the VLK activation server isn't on the network, so I did the TechNet work around and manually gave it the key rather than it getting from the activation pool.  This may be part of the issue, but still not sure about the "Service not started" error.

    Thanks,
    Travis

  • It sounds like the Reg cleanup disabled the license service (SLSVC.EXE). Reboot the machine into Safe Mode as a local admin. Open the Start Menu, right-click Computer. Choose Manage. Open up Service and verify that “SL UI Notification” is set to Manual. Verify that “Software Licensing” is set to Automatic. If either are not properly set, double-click the service to open the properties. Change only the Startup Type parameter and then click OK.

Please let us know if this helps.

  • Hi Travis,
Did you try starting your computer in Safe Mode? try doing a system restore of your Windows Vista through the Windows Recpvery ennvironment which you can acccess through the Windows PE.

Let us know on what happened!
