Office 365 E3 license to add/configure CSWP and Office 365 E1 license to view content in CSWP

    Question

  • Hello,

We have a customer who currently has Office 365 E1 licenses. We are working on implementing an intranet solution for them, and would like to leverage SharePoint Content Search Web Parts (CSWP).

Per this Microsoft Technet article, https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/sharepoint-online-service-description.aspx, the CSWP is supported in Office 365 E3 license.  It is not supported in Office 365 E1 license.

I heard that Microsoft does support E3 license users to add/configure CSWP on a page, and E1 license users can then view the content rendered in the CSWP. Can you please point me to any Microsoft documentation that validates this?

    Thanks.

  • The general guidance from MS is that if it works but isn't included in the licensing terms and conditions then it's allowed. MS won't complain, fine or object but they might someday 'fix' it and so you may lose access to it for your E1s.

The CSWP is a particularly significant example as it's so powerful and so heavily recommended in 2013/Online so that might have been clarified further by MS.
