Hi anandan
first do properly check out and then verify is there any contribute settings is enabled for this page.
generallywhy the master page error will show . because previously may be some body chekout and forgot to checking properly.
you need to no proper check out and then save then you check in. once you click chech in it will ask which version you want check in . select major version.
then goto your site and goto site actions-sitesettings-> click master page option
then right click on master page and approve . then you can see the page

1) The best practice says to avoid making changes to the default master page. Either create your own master page or make a copy of the existing default master page before making any changes.
2) I suspect something is wrong with your Default.master page. It should not give "the master page cannot be loaded" error. Can you review the Default.aspx in Code View and try to locate the issues?

Hi
Please follow the steps mentioned
Modify the default master page (Using SharePoint Designer 2007)
I totally agree to Kamlesh, you should be creating your own custom master page based of default.master
Please follow the documentation
Common Steps for Creating a Custom Master Page
Hope this helps let us know if you are still finding some difficulties.
Thanks
