Question about drag & drop in Vista Vs. XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • When your folder in XP is set to details mode (View -> Details), each folder and file, when selected, is only as large as the text in the file name.  This makes it easy to drop files/folders into that list or into a folder and you don't have to worry about where you release the mouse button because it will only put the file into a folder when you hover over it.  However in Vista for some reason in details mode or any tiled mode, the selection box stretches all the way to the last field that has data in it.  So if your window has sort box along the top all the way to the edges you can't drag and drop willy nilly, you have to get the pointer between two of the files in order to get them to copy the folder.  When you are moving several files at a time between folders and moving quite quickly, if you aren't careful, you'll copy these files into a folder you didn't want to.  Now being an IT, I can get used to this (kicking and screaming) but for the normal user you drags and drops randomly, this will cause move problems with people dragging folders into the wrong places and into places they didn't mean too.  Is there anyway to change the settings to behave more like XP in this respect?

  • You can drop onto the Details Pane at the bottom of the window, as well as any part of the frame.

This annoyed me at first too. :-)

Edit: yikes, forgot to check the date of the OP. Hopefully there will be someone out there who finds this useful anyway!
